I went all in on crazy bright colors and eye-popping art, embracing the spirit of my southern California adventure.
My Los Angeles loft was the entire 4th floor of the historical landmark Tomahawk building, built in 1914 to house financial firms. It was one of the first steel-reinforced concrete buildings on the West Coast. It was converted in 2004 to residential lofts by noted architect David Gray, who kept unit 4 for his personal use with his wife Karen, until they sold it to me in 2019.
Each loft in the Tomahawk occupies a full floor stretching from Spring St to Main St with windows on each end and an elevator opening directly into the unit, a unique Manhattan-like experience for downtown LA.
I gutted and majorly upgraded the kitchen and bathroom that had been done pretty inexpensively in the initial conversion in 2004 given the economics of downtown at that time. I also went all in on crazy bright colors and eye-popping art, embracing the spirit of my southern California adventure.
I finished the project and hosted a housewarming blending bright minds from the worlds of art, tech, and entertainment on February 4, 2020, with no idea that in a month Buzzy and I would be beginning six months of total isolation with no other humans darkening our elevator door; our downtown adventure coming to a necessary close a mere 16 months later. I am pleased that the new loft owner appreciates the work we did.
